In Ontario, it’s a well-known fact that as the baby boomers hit retirement age, we will be facing a shortage of skilled workers. At Stevenson Plumbing, Electrical & HVAC, we believe it’s our responsibility to help build the next generation of expert tradespeople.
Our program works like this: all potential apprentices are hired as labourers to start. After three months, we review the candidate’s work and discuss signing him or her as an apprentice. Because there are a limited number of apprenticeship positions available, only the best possible candidates are offered them. For us, the ideal trajectory is that successful candidates complete their apprenticeships and become journeymen, then take on the task of training the next labourer starting into the trade.
In most cases, we like to see that candidates have done a pre-apprenticeship training course or have some relevant experience in the industry, but it’s not essential. Ultimately, if you join the Stevenson team and work hard, you will find you have lots of opportunities for training, growth and skills development.
Below are the apprenticeships we offer at Stevenson Plumbing Electrical & HVAC, along with their certification requirements, from the Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program (OYAP) website. We also work with non-youth apprentices through Ontario College of Trades apprenticeships programs. Note that while almost 90% of an apprenticeship is paid, on-the-job training, there are also loans, travel allowances and grants available to offset the costs of registration, tuition and certification.
